Fed: TBT paints to be phased out by July 31
Environmentally dangerous paints used to protect the hulls of ships will be phasedout under an agreement between industry and government struck today.
Parliamentary secretary for agriculture, fisheries and forestry, JUDITH TROETH, saysthe deal would ensure the protection of shellfish in the nation's waterways.
The deal will see the phase out of paints which contain tributyltin, known as TBT.
The paints are used to prevent the build-up of organisms such as algae and barnacleson a ship's hull, and also prevent the spread of pests and diseases.
But Senator TROETH says the paints also cause problems to marine animals.
The paints will be phased out by July 31.
