Once mayoral challenger Assemblyman Jack McEneny dropped the role of reluctant debutante, Albany's primary contest of the century got off to a spirited start last week.

Spirited, but so far well within the imaginary lines of civility.

Mayor Jerry Jennings was in Boston for his son's wedding, but he got the city's Democratic Party Committee endorsement as expected. Before the informal endorsement vote, Jack was allowed to speak to the gathering. ``There was no booing or heckling,'' says Jack, praising Democratic Party Chairman Leonard Weiss's handling of the event.
