Qld: New national approach to managing disaster mitigation neede

A leading emergency manager says cooperation between emergency services across Australiawould help reduce the cost of natural disasters.

Emergency Management Australia assistant director JONATHAN ABRAHAMS says more cooperationbetween all levels of government is essential to reduce the impact of disasters.

Mr ABRAHAMS says it was terrific to see the other states assisting New South Waleswith its firefighting efforts.

He says it shows that the spirit of cooperation in the emergency management communityin Australia is alive and well.

He says sharing resources during significant disasters will lead to a more efficientutilisation of resources.

Mr ABRAHAMS was speaking in Brisbane at the first of a series of national workshopson disaster mitigation aimed at increasing cooperation and reducing disaster risks.
